About This Program

Resistance lives in the shadows we film and the stories we refuse to forget. In ZR, a filmmaker is haunted by a creature of his own creation—an ancient presence awakened long ago in a student film, now tamed only by the eye of his old camera. ASCO: Without Permission conjures the spirit of a radical Chicano art collective whose bold, genre-defying works that shattered invisibility, reshaping the boundaries of art, media, and protest. Together, these films summon the ghosts of resistance—real and imagined—to reclaim the frame.

North American Premiere

A filmmaker remembers the first video camera he used when he studied film a long time ago. One of the short films he filmed as a student tells the story of a monster trapped in an ancient cave, but the mysterious being escapes and begins to chase him. Today, the creature still haunts him, the only defense the filmmaker has is that old video camera that allows him to tell his story.

6:30 PM

A genre-defying film that profiles the extraordinary, Los Angeles based, Chicano art group of the 70's-80's, ASCO, who merged activism and art as they challenged representation in the art world, Hollywood and the news media. Unrecognized in their time, they are now being considered amongst the most important artists of the 20th century. --- ASCO: Without Permission is a documentary that brings to light the radical artistry and social defiance of ASCO, the Chicano art collective that emerged in 1970s Los Angeles. Under Travis Gutiérrez Senger's inventive directorial vision, the film fuses nonfiction with fiction to capture the group's experimental spirit, highlighting their fearless "art actions" that challenged racism, media stereotypes, and the exclusion of Chicanos from both Hollywood and the fine art world. Through archival footage, reimagined sequences, and interviews, the documentary shows how ASCO transformed cultural resistance into avant-garde art—without permission. Featuring: Harry Gamboa Jr. Glugio "Gronk" Nicandro Willie Herrón Patssi Valdez Maria Maea San Cha Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya --- ASCO Executive Producers: Gael García Bernal & Diego Luna Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna are best friends and acclaimed Mexican actors who have a decades-long professional and personal relationship, known for their collaboration in projects like Y tu mamá también and their recent Spanish-language series La Máquina. Their bond, which began in childhood, has evolved into a profound "brotherhood," allowing them to work as executive producers and on-screen partners on projects like La Máquina
