Mission & Mandate

Southern Currents Film and Video Collective advances diverse storytelling in Canada by supporting the visibility and development of Latin American, Latinx, Afro-Latinx, and Indigenous media arts. We provide a public platform for artists and their work, fostering greater appreciation of film and media arts as tools for artistic expression, cultural exchange, and social impact.

Our mission is to promote and exhibit Latin American and Latinx media arts in Canada and internationally, while supporting artists and audiences across Ontario. Through our annual aluCine Latin Film + Media Arts Festival, year-round programming, and professional development initiatives, we create opportunities for artists to present their work, connect with audiences, and engage in critical dialogue.

We prioritize underrepresented voices, including 2SLGBTQI+ and BIPOC artists, and deliver accessible, high-quality programming that contributes to the social, educational, and cultural vitality of our communities.
