About This Program

What endures after displacement, loss, and war? Through the film The Most Beautiful Deaths in the World, this program explores the ways memory, creativity, and community become acts of resilience. It invites us to consider how identity is shaped not only by what we leave behind, but by what we choose to remember, carry forward, and make anew. The film is bilingual with subtitles in both English and Spanish.

Canadian Premiere

The Most Beautiful Deaths in the World tells the story of five artists whose families fled El Salvador's civil war in the 1980s, landed in Washington, D.C., and created art out of war as they made a new home in the nation's capital. The film follows a poet's journey to find answers and healing through his writing of Las Muertes and interweaves the portraits of Salvadorean-Wachintonian artists, including a dancer, photographer, and musicians. Their voices and archival images tell a compelling, intimate, and historically-grounded story of a community resolving trauma and finding identity, salvation, and joy.
